Trama
Data stellare 42477.2: L'Enterprise ha l'incarico di trasferire un mediatore di pace su Solais V per cercare di sedarne i dissidi interni che durano da quindici secoli.
La missione si presenta apparentemente semplice, dal momento che Picard dovrà solamente effettuare il trasporto senza interferire.
Ben presto si scoprirà che il mediatore in questione è Riva, un sordomuto accompagnato da tre persone distinte che fanno da portavoce alla sua razionalità, alla sua emotività e alla sua armonia.
Le cose peggiorano quando, giunto su Solais V, Riva vede morire in un attentato le tre persone che l'accompagnano.

Blooper

- A [T:23:41] e [T:38:36] Riker utilizza un metodo tutto suo per configurare il phaser puntandoselo direttamente allo stomaco. Nessuno gli ha insegnato i principi basilari di come si maneggia un'arma?
- Riker ordina al turboascensore di condurlo alla sala teletrasporto 5 (sul ponte 14) [T:01:32]. Riker e Picard escono però al ponte 11 [T:02:14].
- Riker ordina di attivare la curvatura otto mentre la nave è ancora nell'orbita di Ramatis III [T:11:16].
- Quando si teletrasportano la seconda volta su Solais V, nella sala teletrasporto Riker e Worf mettono il phaser nella custodia sul fianco, ma quando si materializzano sul pianeta ce l'hanno in mano [T:38:48].
- Riva dice di riuscire a leggere il labiale dei suoi interlocutori. Possiamo credere che riesca a leggere la lingua con cui parlano i membri della Flotta sull'Enterprise, ma come può leggere il labiale dei Solari, una specie di cui, per ammissione dello stesso mediatore, non conosce nulla?

- La data stellare dello script è 42411.2.
- Prima di scendere su Ramatis III, la scena in cui Deanna chiede a Worf il motivo della sua tensione per l'incontro con Riva, non è presente nello script.
- Nell'episodio il Maestro/Artista del Coro fa l'esempio della dinastia degli Hannover che erano tutti emofiliaci, mentre nello script la dinastia era quella dei Tudor. La correzione è legittima perché i Tudor non soffrivano di emofilia. In verità l'emofilia nella dinastia Hannover si è verificata solamente con la Regina Vittoria, l'ultima degli Hannover.
- Dopo il rifiuto di Riva di procedere con le trattative di pace, nell'episodio è Deanna Troi che si offre di continuarle, ma nello script la persona che decide di procedere al posto del noto mediatore è Picard.
- La seconda data stellare citata nel diario di Riker, nello script è 42111.8.
- Quando su Ramatis III Picard dice a Riva che è tempo di lasciare il pianeta per andare su Solais V in cui la situazione è critica, manca una serie di dialoghi presenti nello script [T:10:41]:

Riva descends the steps, toward Troi.

How long will my journey to
Solais take?
TROI
More than two of your days.
WARRIOR/ADONIS
(Riva comes up and
beside them)
Then, until duty calls, this will
indeed be a pleasant trip.

I did not mean that specifically,
but, yes, I would consider you
a disadvantage.
With that the Warrior/Adonis gets to his feet and
exits. Troi and Riva are now alone. For a beat they
are quiet.

She crosses to them, speaks softly to the captain.
TROI
We must calm him.
PICARD
Lieutenant La Forge. See what
you can learn about this. If it's
possible to repair it, I need to
know.
Geordi takes the "device."
GEORDI
Right away.
Picard follows Geordi out the door.
56A INT. CAPTAIN'S READY ROOM
Picard is there with the Chorus. They have lost their
sense of purpose.
SCHOLAR/ARTIST
This is astounding. Nothing like
this has ever happened.
PICARD
I need your help.
WARRIOR/ADONIS
But what can we do? It's Riva...
SCHOLAR/ARTIST
We don't know anything. We just
say what he tells us.
PICARD
We need to communicate with him.
They have no answers.
PICARD
(continuing)
Surely you know sign language.
SCHOLAR/ARTIST
No.
WARRIOR/ADONIS
We've never needed it.
PICARD
And he neither reads nor writes.
WOMAN
He's never had to.
SCHOLAR/ARTIST
Riva knows sign language. He
learned it on a mission to the
Plaeties system. The parties
there were so paranoid they would
not allow us to accompany him.
WOMAN
Captain -- what's going to happen?
I feel so strange. I've never
been without him before... never.
I feel like I'm losing my mind.
PICARD
You'll be all right. Stay here.
I'll send someone to look after
you. Please... try to stay calm.
Picard exits. For a beat we HOLD on these poor lost
souls.
57 INT. OBSERVATION LOUNGE
As before.
PULASKI
Deafness for all intents and
purposes has been eliminated
except for a few isolated
situations like this. If I can
help you medically -- will you
allow it?
Riva stares at her for a moment. Picard enters. This
is not an easy decision. Then, probably with his
duties on his mind, he nods "yes."
PICARD
Riva knows sign language.
Riva nods.
DATA
Captain. There are just in the
Federation, eighty-one different
variations of signing.
PICARD
(to Data)
Find a way to communicate with
him.
(to Worf)
Take him to Sickbay. Doctor do
what you can.
The Klingon helps Riva to his feet. Picard sees the
panic in his face, tries to reassure him.
PICARD
(continuing)
You are not alone. We will solve
this together.
He seems small and fragile as Worf leads him away.
PICARD
(continuing)
If Riva does not mediate this
summit successfully, the Solari
will destroy each other.
RIKER
But if he can't speak, and can't
use his Chorus, he's useless.
Captain, you should mediate.
PICARD
It is not me they want. They
believe in Riva. The problem
is, he no longer believes in
himself.
Picard gets up, crosses to the door.
PICARD
(continuing)
Keep me posted of Riva's progress.
I'll be in my quarters.
RIKER
Yes sir.
PICARD
We have to find a way to talk
to him.
Picard exits. Off Riker's reaction:

END OF ACT THREE
- Una scena simile a quella in cui la dottoressa Pulaski visita La Forge vista nell'episodio a [T:33:04] è presente anche nello script, ma nella parte finale dell'episodio.

a knowing smile.
